A Guest Post by Diana Nixon
Unfortunately, I don’t have a definite answer to this question, but being a self-published author, I know how much you need to work to make the sales grow. It’s a never-ending run, where every small detail matters.
First of all, you need to write a book of course. No matter what genre you choose, you will always be able to find readers. I work in multiple genres, and I’m sure that every work deserves to be known and appraised. If your book is edited and promoted properly, it will be sold. I spend days spreading the news about my books everywhere I can: on my official page, Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, etc. Some people say that you need to focus on one social network, but I don’t agree. Thank God, today almost all social networks have an option to be connected to other pages and websites. If you want to find readers, and you don’t have a literary agent to do the job for you, you WILL find time for everything. Yes, sometimes it’s exhausting and frustrating, but the result is definitely worth it.
Finding a good editor is one of those things that you need to pay attention to. Today, many editors offer a sample edit. Use it to be sure that the text of your book will look good. Cover design is also very important. While working on my latest fantasy novel, named The Souls of Rain, I learned that a cover can do real magic to the book promotion. The day the cover for The Souls was released, I received so many great feedbacks. Even those readers who never heard about my works, wanted to buy this book only because they wanted to see such a beautiful cover on their bookshelf.
Never think that the time spent on book promotion is wasted. The day your book hit the best selling list, you will realize that every sleepless night you spent working on it, was worth that big happy smile playing on your face today. I can assure you that there will be problems and bad reviews, but we can’t make everyone like what we do. I always say that if you want to get something, you need to do your best to succeed, no matter how many obstacles you will have to go through. There will always be someone willing to help you, so don’t give up and believe in yourself. We all have powers, but the main thing is the ability to make them work for our benefit. 🙂
